William Clifford, Chairman.
Bill Clifford joined Spencer Trask as Chief Executive Officer in March of 2008. During the previous 7 years, Mr. Clifford served in a variety of capacities including angel investor, Venture Partner, advisor, and General Partner in venture activities related to early stage Information Technology companies, the most recent of which was Aperture Technologies – a Spencer Trask portfolio company recently sold to Emerson Electric. Bill joined Aperture in 2005 as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer after serving as a member of Aperture's Board of Directors since 2003. He previously served as a General Partner of The FieldsGroup, a venture capital and management services firm focused on early stage Information Technology software and services firms. In this capacity, Mr. Clifford advised on equity investments and provided operational guidance and consultation to executives of the portfolio companies of The FieldsGroup Venture Fund. Prior to The FieldsGroup, Mr. Clifford was President and CEO of Gartner Group, Inc., (NYSE:IT) the world's leading authority on the information technology industry, user and vendor technology strategies and market research. During Mr. Clifford's tenure, Gartner exhibited phenomenal growth. Annual revenue increased from $175 million in fiscal 1993 to $780 million in fiscal 1999. Under his leadership, Gartner's product line expanded from a single research-based service to include eBusiness/eCommerce research, consulting, events, benchmarking and market data products and services. In addition, he was instrumental in globalizing Gartner's research impact and established research operations in Australia, Asia and South America. Before joining Gartner Group, Mr. Clifford was President of the Central and National Account divisions, and the Corporate Vice President, Information Systems Development at ADP. Prior to ADP, he was the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Applied Data Research (ADR), Inc., the world's first independent software company and a leading systems software and relational data base management organization. He also served as national consulting practice director for Applied Technology Consulting at Arthur Young & Co. Mr. Clifford began his career at IBM Corp. in sales and marketing. He serves on the board of directors of EggsOvernight, Crucian Global Services, ViaNovus, GridApp Systems and SWH Holdings (SWKH.OB). He has been featured in CEO Magazine, Leaders Magazine and Forbes/Executive Edge; and has been a keynote speaker and panelist at numerous Technology Industry conferences. He has also served on the boards of Kana Software (KANA:OB), ProBusiness Services, Inc. (NASDAQ:PRBZ), and Gartner Inc.(NYSE:IT).
William Turner, Director.
Managing Director of Signature Capital, a venture capital firm that he co-founded in 1997 and an affiliate of the Placement Agent. From 1983 to 1989, Mr. Turner served as President, Chief Operating Officer and a Director of Automatic Data Processing (ADP - NYSE), a computerized transaction processing, data communication and information services firm with 1989 annual revenues of over $2 billion. In 1989, Mr. Turner formed Turner and Partners, a management services firm, specializing in the management of leveraged buy outs. For one client, Forstmann Little, he served as Chairman and/or Chief Executive Officer for over thirty separate business units with combined annual sales of over $2.5 billion. From 1979 to 1983, he served as the President of Texas Instruments’ Consumer Products Division. Earlier in his career, he held systems engineering, marketing and senior management positions at Sylvania Electronics and Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). He has served on the Board of Directors of the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Corporation (Freddie Mac - NYSE) since 1990 and currently serves on the boards of several private venture capital companies including Acoustic Technologies, NetNumber, ZOUNDS, Tango Networks, Helium, OurStage and VIRxSYS Corporation.
Eugene Chinal, Director.

Joseph Farrelly, Director.
Mr. Farrelly brings over 25 years of experience as a senior IT executive. He is presently the Senior Vice President, Chief Information Officer at Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc. Interpublic Group is a global provider of advertising and marketing services. He has held the position of Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer at Aventis, Vivendi Universal, Joseph E. Seagrams and Sons, and Nabisco. Mr. Farrelly’s experience covers the Advertising, Pharmaceutical, Consumer Products, Entertainment, Financial Services and Software Industries. Mr. Farrelly also had extensive experience as a senior IT executive at Automatic Data Processing (ADP). Mr. Farrelly is a member of the Boards of Directors of NetNumber, Helium and Tango Networks.
Gary Kline, Director.
Gary Kline, an attorney, was a partner for many years in the Chicago law firm of Wilson & McIlvaine. When that firm merged into the law firm of Quarles & Brady in 1999, he became and continued as a partner of Quarles & Brady until his recent retirement. His focus during the first part of his legal career was in the tax area, but broadened to several other areas during the latter part of his career. Over the years, he represented a broad range of clients as to large transactions and other matters. Among the numerous clients for which he has performed services over the years are numerous large corporations and several major charitable institutions in the Chicago area. He has also served as a fiduciary with respect to numerous entities, including trusts, estates and family investment limited liability companies. He has also been active in leadership positions and on boards of directors of numerous charitable organizations and he also served as president for many years of his community's board of education.
Paula Schmitz Ph.D., J.D., M.B.A., C.F.A. - Secretary to the Board of Directors and General Counsel.
Dr. Schmitz has extensive experience in technology based companies, handling a variety of legal issues including patents and other intellectual property rights, as well as health care and technology licensing. Dr. Schmitz has worked in both large law firms and as inside general counsel to technology companies in biotechnology, software, hardware, internet, medical device, wireless communications and healthcare. In addition to her legal background, Dr. Schmitz has an extensive professional background in corporate finance, is a Chartered Financial Analyst (C.F.A.) and an arbitrator for the N.A.S.D. Dr. Schmitz earned a law degree from The University of Texas at Austin, following her completion of a Ph.D. in finance, as well as a M.B.A., also from The University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Schmitz earned her undergraduate degree from Davidson College. |
